Marvel's Wolverine Gameplay: Combat, Modes & PS5 Systems

Learn about Marvel's Wolverine gameplay on PS5, covering claw combat, rage and healing systems, adaptations, linear levels, and photo mode settings.

Marvel's Wolverine gameplay focuses on linear, close-quarters combat driven by Logan's adamantium claws, parry mechanics, and gap-closing lunges. Players advance through structured campaign missions alongside allies, manage dual progression currencies, tackle optional challenge rooms, and utilize defensive revives tied to rage meters on PS5.

Core Combat Mechanics

Combat relies on rapid attacks using the square button alongside heavy strikes and lunges mapped to the triangle button. When within range, pressing triangle allows Logan to leap forward and close the distance to targets. The core melee system emphasizes parrying, blocking, and stunning targets over evasive movement, though dodges remain available when red warning flashes indicate incoming projectile attacks.

Logan can also execute heavy kicks that slam enemies into walls to induce stun states or boot foes off cliffs and skyscrapers for quick eliminations. Finishing moves feature varied dismemberment and brutal animations such as sliced limbs and jaw stabs. Players can manually extend and retract Wolverine's claws via a dedicated button input (as well as L2 and R2), though this claw toggle has no gameplay effect.

Rage, Health, and Revive Systems

Wolverine possesses a passive healing factor that regenerates health over time during encounters without requiring players to seek out health pickups. Offense feeds into a separate rage meter, which builds as Logan stays aggressive and lands continuous attacks without taking damage.

Rage features three distinct tiers that emphasize endurance, resilience, and unbridled fury:

  • When fully charged, rage enhances finishing moves and triggers critical strikes.
  • If Logan loses all health while holding at least one charged rage bar, he enters a downed state where mashing the square button consumes that rage bar to revive him mid-battle.
  • If health drops to zero with no remaining rage bars, a standard checkpoint reload occurs.

Progression, Skills, and Adaptations

Character upgrades are divided between two progression currencies:

  • Experience Points (XP): Earned through mission progress to unlock foundational skills and special abilities early in the campaign, including area-of-effect strikes.
  • Ability Points (AP): Acquired by finding hidden whiskey bottles or completing Nightmare Trials to unlock gameplay traits called adaptations.

Equippable adaptations let players alter combat parameters to match specific play styles. Supported traits include deflecting bullets and projectile fire while running, widening parry timing windows, reducing incoming damage, absorbing hits, and terrifying attackers.

Traversal, Stealth, and Level Design

Campaign progression is structured around linear missions featuring controlled pathways rather than open-world settings. Arenas frequently connect through narrow corridors, typically pitting Logan against ground-based melee enemies alongside ranged units positioned on perimeter platforms.

Stealth is optional in designated scenarios. Wolverine can crouch through tall grass, traverse rooftops or suspended ropes, and drop down to execute aerial takedowns. Sensory mechanics display a glowing blue line on screen, guiding Logan to whiskey bottles, material caches, and mission items via triangle button interactions.

Between major combat sequences, downtime segments allow exploration of social hubs such as the Princess Bar, Essex Institute, or Old Town. In these areas, players can engage in mini-games like arm wrestling, locate collectibles such as records, discover Easter eggs like Gambit's signature ace of spades, and speak with mutants including Sabretooth and Mystique.

Factions, Bosses, and Team-Ups

Enemies across the campaign include Bolivar Trask's forces, the cybernetic Reavers, and the Hand. Select encounters feature contextual team-up combat sequences where Logan fights alongside allies such as Sabretooth, Mystique, and Jean Grey.

Boss encounters include:

  • Omega Red: A duel centered on wearing down a stagger bar with timed parries.
  • Sentinel: A large-scale encounter focused on targeting the machine's limbs from within the arena.
  • Lady Deathstrike: Confirmed as an opposing villain encounter during the campaign journey.

Outfits, Challenge Trials, and Modes

Nightmare Trials are standalone challenge rooms accessed via dimensional doorways that test combat and movement. These trials award AP based on bronze, silver, gold, and platinum scoring tiers while unlocking fragmented memory sequences from Logan's past.

Material caches gathered throughout missions unlock alternate suits based on comics, films, and animation, such as the Days of Future Past costume. Suits feature visible fabric deformation and damage during combat, and unlocking new suits provides passive health bonuses. Players can also toggle select cowls on or off and combine unlocked claw styles with any suit.

Campaign length runs approximately 15 hours for the core story, with full completion and platinum trophy acquisition taking around 20 hours. Additional gameplay modes available at launch include:

  • New Game Plus: Carries progression into subsequent playthroughs with an increased level cap, exclusive techniques, and additional adaptations.
  • Mission Replay: Allows players to revisit completed campaign missions and Nightmare Trials from Logan's mind cabin.
  • Photo Mode: Provides framing tools alongside improved lighting features.
  • Accessibility Options: Features over 100 manual settings, preset profiles for motor, audio, and visual needs, as well as toggles for dynamic blood, dismemberment, and language.
